Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

I’m Mario, and welcome to the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks of all time! Okay, so it’s Seb, not Mario. Even if I am Italian and have some plumbing knowledge, can it still count? When it comes to N64 games, few are more impactful or just great than Super Mario 64. For crying out loud, the game is a true legend and was the first 3D Mario game we played. Even though we thought this legendary title couldn’t be enhanced, the modding community proved us wrong. They’ve created some excellent hacks of the original title, mixing some of their own and well-known Nintendo characters. There are more stars and new difficulties in Mario 64 than you ever thought imaginable. Check out the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks of all time now!

Top 11 Best Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

1. Mario And The Rod Of Seasons

Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

We are all lovers of the best Zelda ROM hacks, right? Mazza is also involved in this upcoming Link-inspired title. Mario and the Rod of Seasons is heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. Mario is a brave warrior with a rod in his hand. And, although he isn’t dressed in green, Link has offered him some advice anytime they’ve shared the Smash Bros stage. Each level has a seasonal theme that incorporates the elements. Seeing snow and rain in SM64 is amazing (at least for me). So, although the trees may seem suspicious, do not be put off. This is a fantastic hack and an interesting spin on the original game.

2. Super Mario: Star Road

Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

Let’s get this list of the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks off to a strong start. This game is very stunning. The level design is excellent, as is the creative storyline that follows throughout. This isn’t my first time saying this, but it might have been a legitimate Nintendo release! This 2011 release set the standard for many of the ROM hacks on this list. It’s a fan-made fan favorite that many players continue to play because of the multiplayer option. Oh, Mazza and Luigi are finally playing together!

3. Super Mario 64: Kirby Edition

Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

Including the game’s original modified version on the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks is only fitting. That’s correct; Super Mario 64: Kirby Edition is the foremost SM64 character hack in gaming history, and it stars everyone’s favorite pink menace. For the most part, the game plays much like the original. There are some nice bonus elements, like new noises and characters from which to take powers, but the levels are still the ones we know and love. Kirby makes new appearances courtesy of Mario’s trusty headwear. Put on the Metal Cap to play as a Thwomp, then wear the Vanish Cap to transform into Boo! With a new Kirby-friendly plot and the ability to ride and collect stars, this Super Mario 64 ROM hack will rekindle your love for the original stages.

4. Super Mario 64 Sapphire

Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

If you’re searching for a hack that’s easy to execute, Sapphire will do the trick. There are few courses and just a few stars to collect, but this bite-sized Mazza adventure is inventive and enjoyable. If you’re new to the realm of ROM hacks, give this one a try. It seems similar, yet offers a unique adventure that will keep you interested for a few hours.

5. Super Mario 64: Ztar Attack Rebooted

Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks

This next mod in our list of the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks is ideal for people who want a good challenge. Ztar Attack Rebooted is an upgrade to the original Ztar Attack mod. It’s smoother, quicker, and tighter, taking players through the dark Ztar world. Unlike the Kirby Edition hack, Ztar Attack relaunched has many new and unique levels. You might mistake this for a Spiral Mountain/Hyrule mashup if not for the occasional Mushroom! Plus, this game has 50 extra stars to collect, bringing the total to a staggering 170! Better get started now, eh?

6. Super Mario 64: Star Revenge

Star Revenge is one of the most extensive Super Mario 64 ROM hacks available. It spans various releases and has had numerous revisions and remakes. The thing that distinguishes this hack from other SM 64 mods is the Tolkien-style backstory and in-depth plot that players must discover. It is not enough to play one Star Revenge release, as one must truly comprehend The Lord of the Rings by reading the Silmarillion. But I digress; back to Mario. Signor Moustach may collect 125 new stars as he travels to the Mushroom Kingdom’s distant reaches. Stars are threatening the land, and Mazza must put things right. Should he delegate this task to Luigi instead?

7. Yoshi’s Adventure 64

It’s no secret that I am a major Yoshi fan. The man is a hero because any dinosaur who can walk about in clogs that resemble plant pots deserves our admiration. Yoshi doesn’t have as difficult a mission as Mario since he has to collect 56 stars. But it doesn’t mean he isn’t a daring explorer. There’s no indication of the Super Happy Tree or any adorable Shy Guys walking about. In this adventure (Yoshi’s Adventure, to be more specific), players explore the Luna Valley, visit a sweet land, and even go to the moon. There are plenty of ghosts and Yoshis to engage with, but most seem to have stolen sunglasses from the people of Isle Delfino. It’s dark, frightening, and a thrilling adventure. Try it; you will not be disappointed!

8. Super Mario And The Cursed Castles

Super Mario and the Curse Castles is the next entry on our list of the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks ever! Adding one more star to the mix is far from the only thing changing here. Mario faces 15 new and fascinating levels and three vicious enemies. Bowser isn’t the primary opponent anymore. King Boo has unleashed some evil juju on the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario, as usual, is the only one who can rescue the day. In a similar vein to Super Mario Sunshine, collecting power stars removes the curse. Furthermore, there are few assistive elements like cannons or ability hats for players to employ. This is old-school gaming (with a new twist) at its best, requiring skill and patience to finish. Do you have what it takes?

9. Super Mario 64: The Missing Stars

I realize the case isn’t genuine, but Super Mario 64: The Missing Stars’ cover image tops our list of greatest artwork. This may be one of the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks, but I wish I had a physical copy of the game. The first thing to note is this mod’s day/night cycle. It’s always sunshine in the Mushroom Kingdom (except within Boo’s Big Haunt), but players may now look for stars in the dark! Luigi is also a playable character… what more do I need to say? I can’t emphasize enough how much you should check out this mod!

10. Super Mario 64: Sonic Edition

And you thought nothing could top Captain Falcon taking over Mario’s throne, right? Super Mario 64: Sonic Edition gets second place on the list of the best Super Mario 64 ROM hacks of all time! Sonic not only replaces Mario but also has access to a host of famous moves. Sonic does not go slowly; it is just not his nature. That’s why Sonic moves more quickly than Mario, even while strolling. Press Z to proceed into a ball for speedy downhill movement, then button mash B to perform Sonic’s iconic spin dash into foes. Sonic is genuine, with homing attacks and the ability to run on water! Voices, animations, and allusions to Mario have changed, much like Kirby and Captain Falcon. This may be my sinful SM64 gaming pleasure, and I’m so grateful Modder Thodds brought it to the table!

11. Super Mario 64: Last Impact

Finally, Super Mario 64: Last Impact is in our list of the greatest Super Mario 64 ROM hacks of all time! If SM64 had a Nintendo sequel, it would (or should have been) be called Last Impact. This is more than just a mod; it respects one of the best Mario games ever made and includes some incredible features for which modder Kaze Emanuar deserves a medal. We’re talking about new bosses that have been developed and programmed from scratch, the addition of FLUDD and Yoshi to the mix, and new abilities that give Mario an advantage over his adversaries. In addition, there are 130 brand-new stars to uncover and collect, all buried within beautifully crafted levels. SM64 was already a massive game, but this mod takes it to another level. It’s innovative, difficult, and includes a few Mario Party games. What’s not to love?
